Career options for PCB students after 12th

The admission period after 12th is a crucial period for all the students. The responsibility to choose a career that can decide the students' future makes it difficult. The career student chooses, will determine their profession and eventually the rest of their lives too. Therefore they need to explore and understand what to choose after class 12. Students who took the science stream have multiple career options. They have the liberty to even switch to other fields from science. What after PCB?

PCB stands for the subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, which is for students aspiring to take up careers in medical science sectors. It is a common misconception that the career options for PCB students after 12th start and end at medical. But that's not true. After class 12 the choices are open to medicine or dental studies, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, agricultural, dairy science, paramedical or allied fields, animal husbandry, and veterinary science. Now, let us explore the various options available for PCB students after class 12.

Career Options for PCB students?

There are a lot of options available for students who have completed PCB in class 12. For students who have opted for PCMB can avail of the combined option list of PCM and PCB. Some of the career choices for students who have opted PCB in class 12 are:


It is the most common career choice for students opting for PCB stream. i.e. To become a doctor. The first requirement is to clear NEET or the state medical entrance exams and secure a seat in a medical college. The undergraduate programs include MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathy Medicine and Surgery), and BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) that are for five years. Upon completion, the student can opt for postgraduate studies for specialization.


Dentistry is a branch of medicine that deals with the oral cavity. The first requirement is to clear NEET or the state medical entrance exams and secure a seat in a medical college. The undergraduate program available is BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) which is for five years. Upon completion, the student can opt for postgraduate studies for specialization.


The field pharmacy, which is the field of health sciences includes Pharmacists or chemists or druggists who are healthcare professionals, focusing on safe and effective medication use. The student must obtain a B. Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy) degree at a pharmacy school or related institution.

Biological sciences

Biological Sciences deals with the study of living things and covers topics such as Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Evolutionary Biology, and Ecology. B.Sc Microbiology, B.Sc Biochemistry, B.Sc Genetics, B.Sc Medical Science, B.Sc Botany, B.Sc Zoology, etc. are some of the options students can avail. After graduation, the student can go on to a professional, scientific, or technical career. They can also go for specialization studies such as a research doctorate or a postgraduate course after graduation.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. Students who wish to pursue this field must have a Master’s (M.S., M. Tech, M.S.E., or M. Eng.) degree or a Doctoral (PhD) degree in BME (Biomedical Engineering) or any other branch of engineering which has the potential to overlap with BME. B.Sc MLT (Bachelor in Medical Technology) is also an explorable option.


Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or modify products. A student may opt for a B. Tech. Degree in biotechnology or bioinformatics and then pursue further studies in health care (medical), Crop Production and Agriculture, nonfood (industrial) uses of crops, environmental uses, etc.


Nursing is a profession within the health care sector that focuses on the care of patients. It is a field in which a large number of students proceed after class 12. A student has to obtain a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), a four-year undergraduate degree. Advanced education at the graduate level is for specialization as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) or advanced roles in leadership, management, or education.


Physiotherapy is a physical medicine and rehabilitation of patients by helping them improve their physical movement. A student has to obtain an undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and can then opt for a specialization in Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Physiotherapy, Clinical Electrophysiology, Geriatric, Integumentary, Neurological, Orthopedic, Pediatric, Sports, Women’s Health or Palliative Care. B.Sc in Rehabilitation Therapy and B.Sc in Occupational Therapy are other options available for the students.


Optometry is a healthcare profession concerned with the eyes and vision. An optometrist prescribes and fits lenses to improve vision and detects as well as treats various eye diseases. Academic degrees such as Bachelor of Optometry, Master of Optometry, and Doctor of Philosophy in Optometry are awarded in India by the universities recognized by the UGC. Optometrists have to register with the Optometry Council of India.

Hearing and Speech

Students who choose this degree utilize their time helping individuals with hearing or speech problems. Students of this field must be patient and supportive of their clients to be successful clinicians. B.Sc in Audiology, and B.Sc in Speech and Language Pathology, are some of the options available to students who want to go for this.


Veterinary Science is the science of treating and curing the diverse types of diseases of birds and animals. To be eligible for the Bachelor's in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course, the student must qualify the entrance examination conducted by the university concerned. With the tremendous developments in sciences and technology, Several career options are open to graduates in veterinary science.


B.F. Sc (Bachelor in Fisheries Sciences) is a bachelor's degree for studies in fisheries science. Fisheries science is the academic discipline of managing and understanding fisheries. After graduation students can go for Masters of Fisheries Science (M.F. Sc) or they can get into job positions such as biochemists, research assistants, technicians, or as biologists, etc.

Other B.Sc programs

Apart from the above-mentioned courses B.Sc in Agriculture, B.Sc in Horticulture, B.Sc in Environmental Science, B.Sc in Radiography, B.Sc in Food Technology, B.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics, B.Sc in Anthropology, etc. are other B.Sc options available for students within PCB.

Bachelor of computer science (BCS)/ Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA)

Students who are interested in computer science and its application can go for this three-year undergraduate program. This program involves construction, design, operation, as well as maintenance of computing software as well as hardware. After the course, the students can find jobs in the rapidly growing IT sector. The admission for this course is based on merits i.e, performance in class 12th.

Bachelor of Business Administration

The BBA course can provide job opportunities in sectors like Marketing, Education, Finance, Sales, and Government. It is a three-year professional undergraduate course in Business Management that offers knowledge and training in management and leadership skills. The admissions are usually based on merit basis and entrance exams. Students after BBA can pursue MBAs that provide more career opportunities.


B.Com, Banking and Insurance (BBI), Chartered Accountant (CA), etc., are some of the courses available for students who would like to shift their careers to commerce after studying science in class 12. The admission for B.Com is mainly merit-based. To pursue CA the student will have to take the CA-CPT exam.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

BA is a popular undergraduate course of three-year duration. Students can opt for various streams in BA like Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Foreign Languages, Travel & Tourism Courses, English, Archeology, Mass Communication, and Journalism, etc. The admission criteria for BA is merit-based.

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

Civil Services offer opportunities for individuals to work in Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Police Services (IPS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), and other such prestigious Group A, Group B, and All-India civil services. To qualify as an Indian Civil Servant the student has to clear the civil services examination conducted by Union Public Commission of India.
